Marlene is unstoppable. She’s been promoted to the top job at a London employment agency. To celebrate, she’s organised an extraordinary dinner party, attended by famous women of myth and history. But, like her guests, Marlene has had to pay a price for her success. Both in the workplace – at the ‘Top Girls’ agency - and in her sister’s home, we witness the sacrifices and the ruthlessness that have enabled Marlene to reach the ‘top’.

This seminal play, written in the early years of Thatcherism, exposes the human costs of blinkered individualism and questions the value of a feminism that simply mimics the most aggressive and oppressive of traditionally male traits.
