Ruckus Productions present Beautiful Thing by Jonathan Harvey
Jonathan Harvey’s critically acclaimed queer drama refuses melodramatic cliches to offer a story both beautifully uplifting and bitingly witty.
"You see the problem is … you have seventeen heads. And my mother made me swear that I'd never take a drink off a guy with seventeen heads."
Against the backdrop of a London council estate, we see an honest portrayal of two young men, Jamie and Ste, exploring their sexuality for the first time. Sixteen-year-old Jamie lives with his mum Sandra and her boyfriend Tony, next door to the rowdy Leah, who has been expelled from school and spends her days sunning herself and listening to Mama Cass. On the other side is Ste, also sixteen, who ends up sleeping top-to-tail with Jamie after an argument with his violent father. We see their relationship unfold with tentative, awkward delicacy, as Harvey perfectly captures the thrill of a first love.
"There's no such thing as just a kiss. I'll knock you up in the morning, yeah?"
